Why the Palestine hoodie you buy matters more than you think

A guide for people who want their purchase to mean something — before, during, and after the rally.

There are a lot of Palestine hoodies available right now. On marketplaces, on social media, through brands you've never heard of. Some are cheap. Some look the part. Some arrive in two days.

But a hoodie you're going to wear to a solidarity rally, to work on a Monday, to the grocery store in your neighbourhood — that's not a casual purchase. It's a statement you're going to carry in public, repeatedly, for a long time. It's worth spending sixty seconds thinking about where it came from and what it's actually built from.

This isn't about guilt. It's about making a choice that holds up.

Where it comes from

The most common question we get is some version of: is this actually made in Canada?

Yes. Every Butterfly Krafts hoodie, sweatshirt, and t-shirt is designed in Ontario and finished here. Not fulfilled by an overseas warehouse. Not routed through a platform that processes orders in bulk with no oversight. Everything happens close to home — by us, on our terms.

We produce in small batches — intentionally. It gives us direct control over quality at every step, from sourcing the blank garment to applying the final design. Every piece comes from ethical manufacturers we stand behind, and the design work is done by us. When you keep production small and local, problems get caught before they reach you. And if something does go wrong, we know exactly where it happened and we fix it — no third party, no overseas return process, no runaround.

Butterfly Krafts was founded by Mai, a Palestinian-Canadian. The brand exists because she built it — not because a manufacturer saw an opportunity in a trending cause. That origin is reflected in how the whole operation runs: careful, deliberate, and close to home.

Whether it will last

A hoodie that cracks, pills, and fades after six washes isn't solidarity wear. It's fast fashion with a political graphic on it.

Our hoodies are made from 380 GSM heavyweight cotton-poly fleece — pre-shrunk, pill-resistant, with strong colour fastness and guaranteed under 5% shrinkage. That spec matters because it means the garment holds its structure over time. It doesn't go limp after a season of regular wear. It doesn't lose its shape the first time you pull it out of the dryer.

We select our printing method based on what each design demands — the standard is always the same: the graphic outlasts the garment. It won't crack along the fold lines. It won't fade to a ghost of itself after a year of washing. You should be able to wear the Keffiyeh Man hoodie to a rally in October and still have it looking sharp at a march in April.

That's not a marketing claim. It's what 380 GSM fleece and a considered production process actually produce.

What the design actually says

Not all Palestine graphics are equal. Some are decorative. Some are trend-responsive. Some are designed to be broadly appealing without committing to anything specific.

The designs at Butterfly Krafts are built to carry a specific position, legibly, in public.

Exist, Resist, Return — three words that compress decades of Palestinian experience into a statement that needs no footnote. You wear it, and people know exactly where you stand.

Olive Tree Don't Bend — the olive tree is one of the oldest symbols in Palestinian culture. Uprooted, replanted, surviving. This design speaks to the diaspora in a way that goes beyond protest — it's about identity and continuity.

Sorry I'm Not Staying Silent — direct, personal, slightly defiant for people who have been told to keep their solidarity quiet and have decided not to. It resonates especially with non-Arab, non-Muslim allies who want to make their position visible without overstepping.

Each design is chosen because it says something specific — not because it will photograph well and move units.

The giving

10% of every Butterfly Krafts order goes directly to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. It comes out of our revenue — not added to your total, not conditional on a minimum spend. Every order, automatically.

We mention this not as a selling point but as a fact about how the brand operates. If it matters to you that your purchase contributes something beyond the transaction, it does. If you want to learn more about the PCRF's work, you can at pcrf.net.

The hoodie you wear on a Monday

Here's the thing about solidarity apparel that doesn't get said enough: the rally is one day. The hoodie is every day after that.

You wear it on transit. You wear it to pick up groceries. You wear it when a colleague asks what it says. The purchase you make is a decision about what you're willing to carry in public, consistently, not just when there's a crowd around you.

That's why quality matters. A hoodie that looks worn out after three months stops being a statement and starts being something you rotate out of. A hoodie built to last becomes part of how people see you — reliably, over time.

Butterfly Krafts makes apparel for people who have already made the decision. Who isn't trying the idea on? Who wants something built well enough to carry the message as long as they intend to carry it

That's the whole point.

A note on sizing and fit

Butterfly Krafts hoodies are cut with a relaxed, unisex fit — room through the shoulders and chest for layering, without the bulk. They run from XS through 3XL. Every product page has a size chart directly above the size buttons. Size up for a more relaxed feel, stay true to size for a cleaner fit.

The Exist, Resist, Return and Keffiyeh Man hoodies photograph well oversized — a lot of people size up deliberately for that look. The Sorry I'm Not Staying Silent reads better closer to size, where the text sits flat across the chest. If you're unsure, email us at hello@butterflykrafts.ca before you order — we'd rather help you get it right the first time.
